Double-butted tubes are thinner in the middle, and thicker at the ends. Double butting reduces the amount of overall tube material needed without a loss in strength.

Tapered head tube designs are stiffer and stronger than conventional straight head tubes, with the added benefit of offering a greater surface area for welding. Minimal flex at the front of the frame provides increased steering precision and accuracy.
